NEW ORLEANS, La. – Oakwood University softball managed just four runs in its HBCU Athletic Conference series opener as Dillard University came away with a 3-0 sweep. The Bleu Devils downed the Ambassadors 4-1 on Saturday and 18-2 and 4-1 on Sunday. Oakwood fell to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in league play, while Dillard improved to 6-5 and 3-0. Game 1 Katie Johnson's singled to score Jordan Howard in the top of the second inning gave Oakwood an early 1-0 lead, but the Ambassadors were blanked the rest of the way. Dillard scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Jalaa Hawkins was the Ambassadors' top hitter, going 3-of-3 in the game. Howard was 2-for-3 and scored Oakwood's lone run, while MacKenzie Smith and Toni Sims had one hit apiece. Sydney Arnett (1-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, on 10 hits in six innings. She walked two and struck out four. Game 2 Anna Jones went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Ambassadors. Mary McCluskey, Careen Whitehead, Kaley Fuller and Sims each had a hit. Whitehead (1-2) took the loss, allowing 17 runs, 14 earned, on 20 hits in three innings. She walked four. Game 3 Johnson's groundout to score Ashlyn Hallman in the top of the fifth inning prevented Oakwood from being shut out in the final game of the series. Dillard scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and blanked the Ambassadors for much of the game. Howard finished 3-for-3 with a double, while Hawkins was 2-for-4. Hallman also had a hit. Arnett (1-5) took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, on nine hits in six innings. She walked one and struck out five.
