DECATUR, Ala. – Oakwood University will take on Rust College today in the opening round of the HBCU Athletic Conference 2025 Softball Championship at the Wilson Morgan Complex. First pitch is set for noon. The Ambassadors, the No. 4 seed, enter the tournament 7-28 overall. The Bearcats, the No. 5 seed, are 10-31. Oakwood swept the season series 3-0 in Holly Springs, Miss., winning 11-2, 9-1 and 12-1 a month ago. The Ambassadors enter the tournament on a nine-game losing streak. Oakwood hasn't won a game since beating Voorhees University 11-0 on March 29. Meanwhile, the Bearcats have played well down the stretch, going 5-3 in their last eight games. Oakwood is led by HBCUAC Freshman of the Year Jordan Howard, first-team All-HBCUAC outfielder Jalaa Hawkins and second-team All-HBCUAC pitcher Sydney Arnett. Howard is batting a team-high .338 with one home run, 15 runs and 13 RBI. Hawkins is batting .322 with two home runs, 14 runs, seven RBI and six stolen bases. Arnett leads the Ambassadors in the circle. She leads the league in strikeouts with 119, averaging 6.98 per game. Arnett ranks in the top 10 with a 4.81 ERA and has six of Oakwood's seven wins on the season. The winner will advance to play No. 1 seed Stillman College today at 2 p.m. The loser will play Thursday against the Talladega College/Voorhees University loser at noon.
