OAKWOOD SWEPT BY TENNESSEE SOUTHERN DESPITE 25 HITS

PULASKI, Tenn. – Oakwood University softball pounded out 25 hits Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Tennessee Southern swept the Ambassadors 8-5 and 18-9 in a doubleheader at Royce Hughes Field. MacKenzie Smith led the way for Oakwood, finishing 5-for-7 with three RBI. Toni Sims was 4-for-6 with a solo homer, scored four runs and had two RBI. Jordan Howard finished 3-for-6 and scored a run, while Anna Jones was 2-for-6 with three RBI and Katie Johnson was 2-for-8, scored a run and had one RBI. The Ambassadors fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Firehawks evened their record at 4-4. Game 1 Smith and Howard had three hits apiece, while Sims, Jalaa Hawkins and Sydney Arnett had two apiece to lead Oakwood. The Ambassadors hurt themselves by leaving 10 runners on base. The game was tied 2-2 midway through the third inning, but Tennessee Southern pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings and one each over the next two innings to 8-3 lead enroute to the victory. Arnett (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits in six innings. She walked one and struck out three. Game 2 Sims was 2-for-2 with a solo homer, scored three runs and had an RBI, while Jana Morrow and Smith were 2-for-3. Morrow scored two runs, while Smith had two RBI.  Jones, Johnson, Sara Tate and Kaley Fuller had one hit apiece. Oakwood led 8-7 midway through the third inning, but Tennessee Southern outscored the Ambassadors 11-1 the rest of the way to get the sweep. Ashlyn Hallman (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, five earned, on five hits in 1.2 innings. She walked two. Oakwood is at Bethel University Sunday.
