TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Oakwood University women's basketball was 10 minutes away from advancing in the postseason for the first time in school history Thursday afternoon. The Ambassadors trailed Talladega College 52-51 entering the fourth quarter in the opening round of the HBCUAC 2025 Hope Credit Union Basketball Championship inside Birthright Alumni Hall at Stillman College. Unfortunately, Ronnie Abrams' team ran out of gas down the stretch. Kamaria Murray's 3-pointer with five minutes left tied the game at 60-all, but Oakwood managed just three points the rest of the way as Talladega College advanced with a 69-63 victory. The Tornadoes used a 7-0 run after Murray's 3-pointer to seize control enroute to beating the Ambassadors for the second time in three meetings this season. "We were right there," Abrams said. "We just couldn't close it out in the last five minutes after we tied the game." Oakwood finished the season 10-15 and despite not advancing in the tournament, Abrams believes the future in bright. "This is the second year in a row we've reached the postseason," he said. "We weren't able to advance, but we're knocking on the door and next year we hope to knock it down." Murray led the Ambassadors with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes. She was 7-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Saniya Keys finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and one block. Nobody else had more than eight. Murray and Keys combined for 37 points on 12-of-26 shooting, while the rest of the team combined for 26 points on 10-of-39 shooting. Keys and Trenisha Adams, Oakwood's two leading scorers, failed to score in the fourth quarter and managed only two shots between them. Oakwood shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from 3-point range, and 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the free throw line. Teanna Watts led Talladega College with 24 points. Beautiful Curry finished with 11. The Tornadoes shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from beyond the arc, and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the charity stripe.
