Recap courtesy of Molloy University Sports Information NEW CASTLE, DE– After mother nature postponed the first two days of the NCAA East Regional, the seventh-seeded Molloy baseball team took the field against the second-seeded Wilmington Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Lions fell to the Wildcats, 14-5, moving them to the losers bracket with a record of 32-18 while the Wildcats advanced to the winners bracket with a record of 37-20. BOX SCORE How it Happened The opening three innings were scoreless as graduate student Ryan Hynes and Wilmington starter Xavier Cortez stifled both offenses. Wilmington cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of a pair of run scoring singles and a RBI double to pull ahead, 3-0. Molloy answered right back in the top of the fifth, putting together a five-run inning to go ahead, 5-3. Junior Sean Welsh began with an RBI single up the middle and was followed by redshirt senior Matthew Gonchar who doubled home a run. Next up, graduate student Aidan Larkin doubled down the right field line to score Welsh and Gonchar. The scoring was capped by junior Sean Serrano who brought home Larkin to give Molloy its two-run lead. Wilmington punched right back in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing for seven runs on the back of four hits and two Lion errors to reclaim the lead, 10-5. The Wildcats would go on to score two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh and eighth to extend its lead, 14-5, where it would stay for a final score. Top Performances Larkin paced the offense with three hits and two RBI. Gonchar, Serrano, and Welsh drove in a run apiece. Sophomores Joe Burriesci and Anthony Marsillo totaled two hits and scored a run each. Up Next The Lions return to the diamond Sunday, May 18 in an elimination game against sixth-seeded Pace University. First pitch from Wilson Field is set for 9:00 a.m.
