Huge Games From Bigs Lead to First Win

Big men LiWayne Richardson and Will Boyd turned in gargantuan efforts to lift the University of the Virgin Islands Men’s Basketball team to its first win of the season with an 84-71 victory over host Wilberforce University in Continental Athletic Conference action Thursday evening. With the game tied at 23, the Buccaneers went on a game-altering 24-2 run en route to a 53-28 halftime lead. Three quick treys from Jamal Norris defined the run. As a team, UVI shot 18-of-32 (56.3 percent) in the first half. The 84 total points are a season-high for the Buccaneers. The 31 total field goals and the 51.7 shooting percentage from the field are also season-highs. Richardson delivered with season-high totals of 20 points (8-of-10 from the field), 17 rebounds, and four blocks. Boyd had 21 offensive boards, along with 12 points. The two helped the Buccaneers to a 61-31 edge in rebounding, which is a season-high.
