HOWARD, TATE SHINE FOR OAKWOOD AGAINST CUMBERLAND

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jordan Howard had three hits and Sara Tate had two, but Cumberland University scored early and often Tuesday and went on to beat Oakwood University 10-2 and 19-2 in a non-conference softball doubleheader inside Billy Dee Ross Stadium. The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 5-18 overall. The Phoenix improved to 9-13. Game 1 Oakwood scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-1 lead, but managed just two hits the rest of the way. Sydney Arnett singled with one out and Toni Sims followed with her second home run of the season to stake the Ambassadors to a 2-1 advantage. Unfortunately, Cumberland scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-2 and broke it up with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-2. Tate led the Ambassadors' offense, going 2-for-2. Sims and Sydney Arnett were 1-for-2, while Jordan Howard was 1-for-3. Arnett (5-7) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in 4.1 innings. She walked three and struck out six. Game 2 Oakwood pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead, but failed to score the rest of the way as Cumberland won convincingly. Howard was 2-for-2 and scored a run, while Anna Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jalaa Hawkins scored the Ambassadors' other run. Careen Whitehead (0-3) took the loss, allowing 19 runs, 18 earned, on 24 hits in four innings. Oakwood hosts LeMoyne-Owen College today.
