HORNETS’ SEASON ENDS IN MEAC TOURNAMENT LOSS TO TORRID EAGLES

Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 8, 2023) --- Second-seeded North Carolina Central has advanced to the MEAC Tournament semifinals with a convincing 89-59 victory over seventh seeded Delaware State in a quarterfinal contest at the Scope Arena this evening. The Eagles won their eighth straight game overall, and eighth in a row over the Hornets, to improve to 18-11 heading into Friday's semifinal match-up against the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal between No. 3 Norfolk State and No. 6 Coppin State. Delaware State dropped its fourth game in row to end its season at 6-24.   Justin Wright led four double-figure scorers for North Carolina Central with a game-high 23 points on six-for-11 shooting from the field, including three-for-three on three-point attempts, and perfect shooting on eight free throws. Devin Butts came off the bench to add 15 points for the Eagles, highlighted by five three-pointers on 10 attempts. NC Central hit 32 of its 61 shots for the game (52.5%), including 14-for-27 from beyond the arc (51.9%). Khyrie Staten was high scorer for Delaware State with 18 points, while Martaz Robins added 13 and Cameron Stitt 12 for the Hornets. Delaware State scored the first five points of the game, and led 7-2 before the Eagles took control. NC Central was ahead 36-24 at the half, and outscored the Hornets 53-35 in the final 20 minutes.
