Hamby Homers in NCCU’s Loss at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Sophomore Jaidyn Hamby hit her first home run of the season, but the North Carolina Central University softball team dropped its series finale at Gardner-Webb University, 20-3, on Sunday afternoon. After a delayed start due to morning rain, the Runnin' Bulldogs used three big innings to complete the series sweep. Gardner-Webb (10-16) jumped in front with four runs in the opening frame and then pulled away with a 10-run second inning before tacking on six more runs in the fourth inning. Hamby put the Eagles on the board with a solo home run in the third inning. Her first homer of the season was her second collegiate home run. NCCU (2-20) has 18 home runs in its first 22 games of the season, which leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference heading into league play next week. Six different Eagles have accounted for those 18 long balls. Juniors Imara Harrell and Maegan Garrison drove in the final two maroon and gray runs in the fourth inning. Freshman Takia Nichols started the frame with a double, The Runnin' Bulldogs scored their 20 runs on just 10 hits as they were awarded 14 free bases (13 walks, 1 hit by pitch). Nine different batters accounted for the 10 GWU hits and five different Runnin' Bulldogs had multi-RBI performances. NC Central will open up MEAC competition with a three-game weekend series at South Carolina State University (Orangeburg, S.C.) on Saturday-Sunday, March 18-19.
