Giles built his decorated coaching career on the foundation of his own success as an athlete. A standout 800-meter runner in college, Giles earned Junior College All-America honors in 1985 after finishing eighth at the indoor national meet for Hagerstown (Md.) Community College. He continued his career at the University of North Florida, where he set the school's 800-meter indoor record.
