ECC Women's History Month Series: Riley Hammond and Oksana Zahirna, Staten Island Women's Soccer

Hammond: It’s important to recognize and celebrate Women’s History Month because it is important to acknowledge the impact that these strong women have made to society. Zahirna: Recognizing and celebrating Women’s History Month is important because it highlights the achievements and contributions of women throughout history, many of which have frequently been overlooked or undervalued. This observance promotes gender equality, inspires future generations, and reminds us of both the progress made and the persistent challenges that still exist. Hammond: Women’s History Month as a collegiate athlete means remembering the women that have made this opportunity possible for me and so many others. Using their voices to make space for the women today. Zahirna: For female athletes, Women's History Month is a reminder of the strength, resilience and progress of women in sports. It allows female athletes to compete at a high level and show that they are just as good as men and can play on the world stage. It also inspires me to push boundaries, support my teammates and appreciate the progress that is still needed for true equality in athletics. Hammond: Kelly O’ Hara from the United States Women’s National Team has been someone that I have admired throughout my athletic career. I have always looked up to and admired her style of play, and loved watching her play for the national team as a little girl. Zahirna: I admire Alexia Putella´s from Spain – a two-time Ballon d’Or winner and the leader of Barcelona. Her technique, vision on the field, and leadership qualities make her a true legend. If we’re talking about goalkeepers, I admire Alyssa Naeher, the longtime starter for the U.S. Women’s National Team. She played a crucial role in the team’s 2019 World Cup victory, making key saves in high-pressure moments. Her reflexes, leadership, and consistency set a great example for aspiring goalkeepers.
