HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – Sydney Arnett went the distance Sunday to power Oakwood University to a sweep over Rust College in an HBCU Athletic Conference doubleheader. Arnett (4-6) allowed only three runs, two earned, on five hits in 10 innings as the Ambassadors downed the Bearcats 11-2 and 9-1. She walked five and struck out 13. Oakwood improved to 4-16 overall and 3-5 in league play. Rust fell to 5-22 and 2-4. Game 1 The Ambassadors used a pair of big innings to win the opener 11-2. Oakwood erupted for six runs in the third inning and added five more in the fifth, including an inside-the-park grand slam home run from Careen Whitehead. Offensively, Toni Sims was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and scored two runs. Jalaa Hawkins was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Kaley Fuller and Arnett had a hit each. Fuller, Mary McCluskey and Sara Tate scored two runs each, while Arnett scored one Game 2 Oakwood scored two runs in each of the first two innings and pushed across five more in the third to win easily. Anna Jones led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and scored a run. Tate was 1-for-3 with a double, three RBI and scored a run. Hawkins, Katie Johnson and McCluskey had a hit each. Ashlyn Hallman scored two runs, while Hawkins, Johnson, Sims, Jordan Howard and McCluskey scored one each. Oakwood and Rust will complete the three-game series today.
